It’s been a long time. I thought I had tried every possible option. But finally I have sound working under Linux on my laptop! No more rebooting into Windows just to Skype my parents!
For my reference (and it always pays off to post this somewhere) and anyone else who may be looking for the option, my sound seems to be working if I append the following line to the bottom of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=acer-aspire-7730g
I haven’t fully tested it, but at the very least it has a full volume range.
